1. Fortune's Menagerie
New year has come and yet another family of Beasts have come to roam around Vana'diel. You may have noticed a group of Bugards roaming around on your travels. If you give them something, I'm sure they'll give you something in return.
2. The Battledore
TO start this quest you'll need to talk to one of the event npc's. They are Jeanparmand, who can be found in Northern San d'Oria (D-8), Bunta in Bastok Markets (D-11) and Pyru-Copyru in Port Windurst (B-4). Talk to them and they'll mention about the Bugards wandering around and ask if you can get a New Year's Gift from them.
You can find them all over Vana'diel (except in Dungeons and Towns). Once you found the group of Bugard, trade random items and you'll recieve numourious effects. These effects include Protect, Shell, Enthunder and Shockspikes. Don't worry about the Bugards attacking you, they are counted as 'npcs' and wont harm you. Make sure you are trading items to the leading Bugard, which in most cases is the Wood Bugard. After trading some items to the Wood Bugard, you will eventually receive a New Year's Gift.
NOTE: Don't expect to get it on the first couple of trades. It can take some time. Trading gil and ex items will work, however these items will be rejected and you wont be able to gain the Battledore this way. You will still receive the effects though.
Once you have obtained the New Years Gift, return to the event NPC you spoke to and trade them the new years gift. Once you have done that, choose the second option and you will obtain the Battledore. It is possible to do this numerous times but you'll receive fireworks instead. The New Years Gift can also be used to gain a Fishing Syntheisis Support Image however in doing so makes the New Year Gift dissapear.
3. The "Hoary Spire"
Onward with the second part of the quest! Now you have the Battledore, take a ride on the Windurst-Jeuno Airship. It doesn't matter which way you are going, the event can happen on either trip.
Once en route, go up the decks and talk to Dilauriome. Make sure you have the Battledore equipped. He'll talk about making a special gift for you if you bring him 'two jars of black ink' and 'a sheet of bast parchment'. These items can be found on the Auction House. Once you trade the items to Dilauriome, he'll make you a copy of Hoary Spire.
The Hoary Spire gives the Moghancement "Money" which multiplies your gil, possibly like the Thief ability 'Gilfinder'.
4. Background
"This event is the latest in a tradition of mini-New Year's events themed on the coming year's animal in the Chinese Zodiac. 2006's New Year's event featured Fenrir, as 2006 was the Year of the Dog. 2005, being the Year of the Rooster, had a New Year's Day pre-event featuring a Bird-type NPC called a Bird of Wonder (trailed by three Birds of Peace). 2004, being the Year of the Monkey, featured a "family" of Opo-Opos.
2007 is the Year of the Boar in the Chinese Zodiac, hence the appearance of Bugards." - FFXIclopedia.com
