Today I decided to do nothing but cooking. While doing so I decided I'd compile my list of how I got there (keeping track along the way). I wanted to lvl cooking to 40 just so I can make my own Meat Mithkabobs, Apple Pies and juices.
To start with... get to Sandy. There's no place better to start cooking than Sandy, 'specially if you have high fame.
We'll start out with Carrot Broth.
I made Carrot Broth from lvl 1-4 (or thereabouts, I cannot remember). You can sell this at the AH, but it's a slow mover, or you can sell it to an NPC at a loss. The other option is if you have a lvl 23 BST (or if you know one you could give it to him/her) you can use it.
Then I switched to Grilled Hare. "Why?", you ask. Well, because I was tired of making Carrot Broth and I was lvling BST at the time so I figured I could make some cheap food that I could use. This wasn't very expensive because I was able to farm both the Hare Meat and the Fire Crystals, so I only spent about 900g per stack of Dried Marjoram.
At lvl 6 I switched to Orange Juice. Some people will tell you to go with Sliced Sardines. I chose OJ because I was still lvl'ing BST some (WHM subbed, of course) and then I switched to lvl'ing BLM, so I was able to use the OJ to decrease my downtime. I did OJ until lvl 8 or 9.
Then I switched to Sliced Sardines. Since Sliced Sardines cap at 11, I was able to make them with virtually no failures.
At lvl 11 I switched to Selbina Butter. Going from lvl11 to lvl 16 took about 4 stacks of Selbina Milk, 4 stacks of Rock Salt, and 5 stacks of Ice crystals (because of failures). At this stage make sure to start using Advanced Synthesis Support. All 3 of these items are pretty cheap. Keep the Selbina Butter as you will use it for Baked Popotos. I managed to make 15 stacks of Selbina Butter.
Around lvl 16 switch to Baked Popotos. You can stick with Selbina Butter since it doesn't cap until lv 20, but then you'll have way too much butter, plust this is a quick lvling item. You will most likely lose gil doing Baked Popotos, but it will be worth it once you've gained the lvls. Remember all those Fire Crystals you sold? Well, it's time to buy them back. I used 5 stacks of Fire Crystals, 4 stacks of Popotos, and 4 stacks of Selbina Butter (crafted from before) to get from lvl 16 to 20. You can also use the Baked Popotos if you don't want to sell them. They give HP:20, DEX:-1, VIT:2, so they'd be great for a low lvl tank or when soloing. From lvl 17 to 20 I only had 5 failed synths.
At lvl 20 I made one more stack of Baked Popotos which lvl'd me 0.6 points. At this point I switched to Insect Paste. It caps at lvl 29, so use Advanced Image Support until at least lvl 25. Making Insect Paste is extremely cheap. You can easily make gil on this. The only real problem with making Insect Paste is for each successful synth you have one stack of paste, so make sure to have plenty of space when you start synthing. If you sell this at the AH you can double your profit, but sometimes you might have to wait all day for it to sell. I was able to take Insect Paste to lvl 28.
At lvl 28 I switched to Pineapple Juice. This sells well in bazaars and at the AH, but I used mine. I took it with me when lvl'ing WHM and was able to get good use out of it. Plus I was able to synth this in the field.
At lvl 28.8 I switched to Meatballs. Meatballs caps out at 35, so they are safe to do without synth support. You can either sell the results on the AH for a profit or to a NPC for a loss of about 120g per synth.
Once I hit 33.5 I started on Fish Broth. Since I’d saved up my unused Bastore Sardines I was able to save a little on cost here. I took Fish Broth to about lvl 35.5.
Then I switched to Melon Juice. Buying the ingredients from a regional vendor and the crystals from the AH I was able to make these for about 514g each. They sell for 700 in Sandy and 900 in Jeuno. You may have a hard time moving these since most players will go for the cheaper Pineapple Juice, but I suggest using them, giving them to a mage friend, or setting up bazaar in Jeuno. Melon Juice will take you to lvl 40.
I switched to Pie Dough at lvl 38 (instead of taking Melon Juice to 40). I did this since I will be using the Pie Dough for Apple Pies and so I could stack the result instead of having to try to get rid of the Melon Juice. I took Pie Dough to lvl 42 and ended up with 13 stacks of it.
At lvl 42 I switched to Apple Pies. I used Lizard Eggs until lvl 46, then switched to Bird Eggs. I did Apple Pies until lvl 49, but I suggest you stop at 47. Trust me, you will be sick of Apple Pies.
Instead switch to Crayfish Balls at lvl 47. These are both cheap and easy to make and sell back for double what you paid for them. Fishing supplies sell very well in Windurst. I took these to about 51.3 where they stopped giving many skill gains.
I think I took Beaugreen Sautee to lvl 54-55ish. Since I forgot to make note of it I’m not completely certain.
On the same note I did some Stone Cheese and then switched to Melon Pies.
From 57.6 to 60.0 I made Stone Cheese. These are extremely cheap to do and you can actually make a small profit by selling the results to a NPC.
I'll update this page more as I go along.
