1.0 Purpose
The purpose of this guide is to help you level your fishing skill. This guide is NOT intended to be a ‘get rich quick’ scheme. Using this guide, you will be able to make more money than you spend, but you will not be pulling in huge sums of gil. Rather, you will skill up as quickly as possible, enabling you to get to a level where you CAN make huge gil fishing as soon as possible. The payoff on passing on slow-leveling big-gil methods is that you will get to a point to make huge gil (not just big) much earlier, and in the long run, you will make more money. There are several guides available on other forums that can guide through a gil-making leveling process if you decide you would rather go that direction. This guide, like fishing in general, will test your patience, ever more so because you will not be making as much gil as you could be. BUT it will payoff down the road.
1.1 Basics and Macros
Fishing is very simple. All you need in order to fish is a rod, some bait or a lure, and a body of water. The basic command to fish is “/fish”. Fishing can also be done from the menu if you have selected yourself. You must be facing a body of water in order to fish.
Macros can make fishing a much easier task. There is a certain time limit you must wait in between when you have reeled in your previous cast and when you can make your next one. It is extremely boring and frustrating to have to guess when enough time has passed. A simple fishing macro can be made that will automatically wait long enough before your next cast. The macro is…
/wait 13
/fish
Fire this macro as soon as you have finished your previous cast and you can access macros again. This will make fishing immensely easier. Also, for every rank you gain (not level!) in fishing, you can take 1 second off the delay. This number may change depending on whether or not you have fishing gear. If 13 is not long enough, simply add 1 until it is.
Also, there is a certain technique to fishing. I have not done any tests or anything to back this, but as far as I can tell, there is a certain timing to be used when reeling in fish. For the most, I reel in my catch on either the third or the fourth tug. In my experience, the catch rate is definitely lower when you reel in as soon as the fish hits.
If you are using a PS2 to play, you can also avoid breaking rods if you have the vibration turned on. If you feel an abnormally large vibration, there is a good chance you caught something that will break your rod. You can simply not touch any buttons and eventually you will lose the catch, and save your rod. There is another technique that people refer to as ‘sweat fishing’ but I have not really looked into it. There are plenty of other sources available if you are interested in this method.
You may also want to considering zoning from time to time while fishing. Some people believe that if you stay in a zone for a long time, your bite rate will go down, and your rusty catch rate will go up. Other people think streaks are all part of the game and zoning or logging out then logging back in have no effect on fishing. Personally, I try to zone every 90-120 minutes, just to break the boredom, and it also gives me a good chance to sell my fishies.
1.2 Equipment
The most basic pieces of equipment are the rod and the bait or lure. If you plan on fishing a lot, it would be very wise to invest in the fishing equipment. It is pretty expensive, but it will pay off in the long run. The fisherman’s gloves and boots will each cost somewhere between 1500-2500 gil. The fisherman’s tunica and hose will each cost 7500-8500 gil. The 20000 gil entry fee is pretty hefty, but it will pay for itself pretty quickly. Also, make sure you buy your lures from the guild if they are available there. They will be much cheaper than they are on the AH. Lures are also available on the Ferry between Selby and Mhaura.
Using bait or lure both have their advantages and disadvantages. Bait will be consumed with each strike by a fish, whether or not you catch it. This means that you will constantly have to buy more bait, which means if you’re not catching the fish that strike, you may end up losing money. If you choose to use a lure, you will not be consuming bait with each cast. However, you will have to replace lures if your line breaks, or if your rod breaks, you will need to replace both the rod and the lure. Bait seems to get struck at a little bit more often lures, but I haven’t found definitive evidence for this yet.
Different fish will be attracted to different bait or lures. Also, different rods are good for catching different fish. The two basic types of rod are big fish rods and small fish rods. While a big fish rod can on occasion catch small fish, and vice versa, they are not very effective at catching the opposite type of fish. Also, when fishing with a small fishing rod using bait that attracts big fish in an area that has big fish, you are severely at risk to break your rod. It should also be noted that fishing with a rod designed to catch big fish will severely hinder your ability to catch small fish. With a big fishing rod, many small fish strikes will result in a ‘whatever caught the hook was too small to fish with this rod’ message. If you are fishing in an area that is loaded with small fish, you will want to use a small fish rod in order to not lose as many catches.
1.3 Conditions
Your fishing results will hinge greatly on the day, time, weather, and moon conditions of Vana’diel. There are several days that are reputed to be especially bad, and some that are reputed to be good. I have heard that Watersday is supposed to be good from some places, but in my experience, Watersday is not a good day to fish. I have also heard from some that Darksday is a bad day to fish, but in my experience, some of the best fishing days I have had have been Darksdays. To be honest, I am usually not paying enough attention to the day to determine which are bad and which are good.
Fishing success also varies based on the time of day. The best times of day to fish are dawn (5:00-6:00) and dusk (17:00-18:00). Nighttime is better for fishing than daytime is. Also, the weather will affect fishing. Fish will bite more when the surface of the water is disrupted. This means that fishing will be better during windy days, and also cloudy and rainy days.
From what I can tell, the greatest factor in determining fishing success is the moon phase. The best times to fish are full moon and new moon. You will find you have much more success fishing at these times when compared to fishing during any other moon phases. I usually try to get most of my serious fishing done either around the new moon (10%-0%-10%) or the full moon (90%-100%-90%). During these times, you will get noticeably more bites. This means more money, and most importantly, more chances to skill up.
