WAR is a great job for beginner's. It isn't particularly difficult to play, it isn't particularly expensive to level. However, I think WAR gets severely overlooked at the higher levels. Later they get some very powerful abilities, like Warcry. Most people level 30 to WAR and then go get an AJ, but it warrents consideration as a full time job as well.

I actually plan on boing back to leveling my WAR when my drk hits 36, cos im gonna buy the silver mail at 36, but want to use my centurians to get my war up to 36 first. switching back and forth between a DD and a tank will keep things interesting. the ultimate is when i hit 60 with drk and will try hitting a rabbit outside sandy with <warcry> <souleater> <berserk> <lastresort> <meat mithkabob>....anything else i can do to blast the shit out of that bunny?

You won't be able to use Warcry because Warcry is a level 35 WAR ability and that means your DRK would have to be level 70 rather than level 60. You might try subbing THF and using SATA, I am not sure if that would trump Berserk or not. Also, if you have the gil to toss around, why not use a Chiefkabob? ;D

mmm, warcry is 35 isn't it, well damn. eitherway. i dunno about subbing thf, its just not my style, and though many say it's 'necessary' i don't think i'll be going down that road. but back to WAR...um...tank.

I can't make up my mind on which job to do after I get my RDM to lvl 75. Should I do WAR or DRK? I want a melee job but hate pulling ><

This is Val, posting as Bas again (too lazy to log him out on his laptop). DRK and WAR are both expected to pull sometimes, sorry to say. DRK are often expected to pull with either Poison or Bio. WAR are often expected to pull with ranged attack. Usually, if you are a WAR who is tanking, you can weasel out of pulling. The best way to ensure that you will be tanking is to be a WAR/NIN and have your Utsusemi so you can blink tank. However, this requires leveling NIN as well, and is very expensive. Of course, even then some people might ask you to pull with your other ninjitsu abilities...

Any job can be asked to pull. In Garlaige I had to pull as a MNK. Run around holes, hit mob, run for life, hope tank is a quick voker and other pt's aren't in the way.
Since you've played RDM to such a lvl, complicated jobs should be nothing to you, but if you want a very easy job I'd go WAR. When I played WAR it was one of the most fun jobs that I've played. Also, being the tank can have an excitement all it's own (also something I've experienced as MNK).

Not to knock DRKs, despite their penchant to knock SAMs, but I consider WAR to be a much more fulfilling job. This may be based more on my own personal mentality more than anything. WAR is an extremely selfless job, and I took a lot of pride knowing that I was the one who was going to bear the brunt of the badness so that other people can do what they need to do. That was one of the deciding factors in my choice to level SAM as a main over DRK. DRK will do more damage, but I enjoy the more selfless way a SAM improves everyone's damage to the all-out bad-assitude of the DRK.

WAR can also be a very selfish job. If you think about it as a job where you are taking all the brunt of the hate and without you the pt would die and so on an so on. Any job can be selfish or selfless depending on the person.
But as for choosing something other than DRK for your reasons.... Well, I choose MNK for the simple fact that I liked the thought of doing h2h dmg and not having to deal with magic. After playing MNK it has been really great being the backup (and sometimes main) tank. By doing so I know I am doing a good deal of dmg and I'm able to grab the mob when the WAR or a mage needs saving. DRKs can't really do this as much since they are weaker defense (in general). Because of the added HP that a MNK has it is a good backup tank. It's also mildly surprising that even with cloth/leather armor a MNK can take a great deal of dmg that another job which can wear heavier gear cannot (DRK, DRG, ...).

Is very true Ik, coming from the DRG perspective. Def I have none. I have seen WHM with higher def than me lol. Not that I have shitty gear, its just that you become so specialized in offence that you have no defence. I have started carrying higher def gear, to compensate for this. My dam and accuracy suffer but at least I wont get my ass handed to me. Especially by those damn 40 lvl Mnk's!!
