Hey all, I have had noticed a few people inquiring about the SAM quest of late, so I figured I would go over it here so people can decide if they want to do it, and what they need to get it done.
You will need:
Chocobo License
Silent Oils, Sneak, or high enough level to not be aggroed through the Sea Serpent Grotto
Kazham Airship Pass
One Hatchet
Scroll of Instant Warp or Warp ability (not entirely needed, but strongly encouraged)
A job that is level 30 or higher
To start, head out to Kazham. Once you are there, grab a choco and head into the Yuhtunga Jungle. From here, you will want to go to the Sea Serpent Grotto. The entrance to the Grotto is in the South-West portion of the area, behind a waterfall. Finding this entrance is probably the most difficult part of the trip. Try to make your way down to the Outpost. There will be three holes out there. Two are connected and will take you back to the outpost, the other, nearest the waterfall, will take you to the level you need to be at to get inside. The easiest way to get to the Grotto is to go with someone who knows how to get there.
Once inside the Grotto, you will want to use your Silent Oil or have Sneak cast on you, as all mobs in the area aggro to sound (you will NOT need invis or Prism Powders). While the Grotto is a somewhat windy place, the trip to Norg is actually quite simple. Make sure you keep your sneak up, and simply hug the right wall the entire time, taking every right that you can. Eventually, you will come to an unmarked door. Open, head on through, and continue along the right wall. You will be in Norg before you know it. As long as you don't piddle around, one Sneak or Silent Oil should be enough. I have never needed a reapplication in all my trips there. If you are level 60 or so, you will not need to be quiet, the mobs will be to weak to aggro. At 51, most of them all check Easy Prey to me, but some are undead, and there's no shortage, so it's best not to test your luck until you know with 100% certainty that you will be safe.
Once you arrive in Norg, you will have no map (I believe it is a reward for one of the Zilart missions) but you will not really need it. Ahead of you on your right will be a big set of stairs. Go up the stairs, and through the door that has the two large crossed swords over it. Head to the back of this area to find Jaucribaix. He will be your main man for SAM, so get used to his ugly mug. Talk to Jaucribaix, and he will tell you about Samurai and also that he needs a Bomb Steel and a Sacred Sprig. He also says to talk to his assistants to find out more about these things.
Head down the stairs and talk to Aeka. She will give you an Oriental Steel. Track down Ranemaud, and he will give you a Sacred Sprig. These are the two items you will use to obtain the items Jaucribaix asked you for.
Once you have started the quest and obtained these two items (be aware, these are NOT rare/ex or key items, they will go into your inventory as if they were normal items), it is time to head out. The best way to get out is the Bloodport. Somewhere in Norg, you will find a Nomad Moogle. Pop on a level 1 job, run out into the Sea Serpent Grotto, and an Ironshell will be more than happy to send you on a way one trip back to your homepoint.
Your first destination will be the Konschat Highlands. One the West end of the Highlands, you will see a small arm between the mountains. At the back of this arm is a cave. This is where you will go to get your Bomb Steel. You will need to kill a level 33 bomb NM named Forger at this point, so make sure you are prepared to do so. 33 seems like a slight underestimation of this NM. Don't count on soloing him if you are 40, as odds are it will not go in your favor. Just bring along someone who is 50 or so, or a balanced party of 40 and you will be alright. Also, I will be happy to kill Forger for anybody who needs to do this quest. It's my duty as a Samurai. Anyways, to fight Forger, you first need to bring him out of his hiding spot. To do this, trade your Oriental Steel to the ? ? ? in the back of the cave. When Forger bites the dust, he will drop a Bomb Steel. You will need your party to pass on this item so you can lot for it and get it. Forger only drops one at a time, so if you are doing this quest with friends who also need the Bomb Steel, you will have to wait three minutes before you can summon and fight him again. A ghost spawns in the cave at night, so be aware of that. I don't know if it would aggro a 30 or not, but it is usually better to be safe rather than sorry. Once you have your bomb steel, you are ready to go get your Sacred Sprig.
To get the Sacred Sprig, grab a Chocobo in Jeuno, and head out to the Meriphataud Mountains. From there, head to the Sanctuary of Zi'Tah, which is in the Northeast corner. Make sure you bring a hatchet with you!!! In Zi'Tah, head to L-9 (which doesn't show on the map). This area is all the way to the East, and since you are on chocobo, you will not need to worry about aggro. Just head East and you will find it eventually, or better yet, go with someone who knows the way. You will find a giant (and I mean GIANT) tree out there with a ? ? ? on the side. This is where you will fight the Guardian Treant. Make sure everyone in your party is ready to go, and try not to stray far back away from the tree, as there are some gobs in the area that will aggro you up until I believe 48-50 or so. Once you are ready to fight the tree, climb up the rocks near the ? ? ? to get close, and trade your Hatchet to the ? ? ?. This will bring out the Guardian Treant. Kill the treant, and then climb back up the rocks, trade your Sacred Sprig to the ? ? ? and you will receive your Sacred Branch, the second item you need to become a Samurai. From here you can pick your method of getting home. Instant Warp, Warp or Warp II is the best way, as there are some pretty nasty things in Zi'Tah that will aggro you on the way out. You could sneak/invis your way out, but it would be kind of a pain. Also, if you are 30 or so, and don't treasure your experience points that much and have a hefty buffer, bloodporting is fast and easy.
Once you have your Bomb Steel and Sacred Branch, it is time to go back and visit Jaucribaix. Go back to Norg, and find Jaucribaix. He will chat you up, and then Gilgamesh will join the party. Jaucribaix tells you that your reward will be ready in 3 days, which is 3 hours of game time. Talk to him after 3 hours are up, and you will receive the Mumeito (level 1 Rare/Ex Great Katana) as well as the ability to become a Samurai. It should be noted that if you plan on taking SAM to a high level, you should hang on to this Mumeito, as it is needed for AF1, and while you can buy another one should you rid yourself of this one, it will cost you 30k.
That is about all there is to the SAM quest. It is reputedly the hardest job to unlock, but it is really not too bad if you have the right help and don't futz around too much.
I am curreently at level 51 with Samurai, so I can solo this quest. If you ever want to unlock SAM, just let me know and I will do my best to get it for you. Good luck and happy Samuraiing.
