SAMURAI 101
Samurai Flag Quest: Forge Your Destiny
Location: Norg, Near the Captains Quarters
NPC: Jaucribaix
Quest: After talking to Jaucribaix, you will need Bomb Steel and a Sacred Branch. To obtain them you will first need two other items.
- Talk to Aeka (I-8), who will give you Oriental steel, and Ranemaud (I-7), who will give you a Sacred Sprig.
- You will now have to kill two NM’s. One is in Sanctuary of Zi'Tah. Once there, go to east of (K-10). Now head East (will go off map).
- You will come to a huge tree with a <???>. Hit the tree with a hatchet and a Guardian Tree will spawn.
- If more than just one in your party needs this part, you only need kill it once for everyone to get the item. After it is dead, trade
the Sacred Sprig to the <???> to get your Sacred Branch. The other NM is in Konschtat Highlands (D-7).
- Once there, trade your Oriental Steel to the <???> to spawn a Forger. Kill it and he will drop the Bomb Steel. You have to kill it once for each member of the party that needs it. If you mess up your lot for the item, you will have to go back to Aeka to get another Oriental Steel, which will
cost you darksteel ore, and kill it again for your Bomb Steel.
- Now return to Jaucribaix with the items. He tells you he needs three days
(game days) to prepare the sword for you. Come back to him after the three days for your reward.
- You will now be able to become a Samurai and you will get Mumeito. Keep this sword for your AF1 quest. You will need it to obtain Magoroku.

Sub-Jobs
I have found only 3 jobs that benefit SAM well. WAR for its versatility and double attack. THF for its obvious SATA abilities. RNG for its extra WSs and accuracy boost. You will most likely be using all of these at one time or another, but for how long depends on your play style.
Warrior
Warrior is the Sub-Job of choice for Samurai. You will be getting a great deal of all around good abilities to aid you in dealing damage and gaining TP faster. With good stat bonuses and HP this job will make your life as a Samurai much easier. The list of job abilities and traits you will be gaining and the level you will be getting them at are as follows.
- 10 Provoke {0:30/Instant}
- 20 Defense Bonus
- 30 Berserk {5:00/3:00}
- 30 Resist Virus
- 50 Defender {3:00/3:00}
- 50 Double Attack
- 60 Attack Bonus
- 70 War Cry {5:00/0:30}
Berserk is going to be a wonderful addition to your arsenal of abilities. Adding extra damage to your swings will help to kill the monster faster making the fight shorter and prolonging the time between when you mages must rest. Defender will couple nicely with provoke for when you are being the trick partner or taking unnecessary agro. The bread and butter of subbing warrior is Double attack. You will be getting TP faster as well as hitting more killing the monster faster. Beauty of a trait. The attack bonus is a no-brainer. War cry is great to help your party seal the deal or use it right before a large multiple person SC. Lots of pain for everyone.
Thief
Thief is more of a late game Sub-Job. Until 30 there really is no reason at all to sub thief. They have next to nothing to help you besides boosted dex till 30. After 30 and again at 60 thief will come into its own. Abilities and levels as follows.
- 10 Steal {5:00/Instant}
- 10 Gil Finder
- 20 Evasion Bonus
- 30 Sneak Attack {1:00/Instant}
- 30 Treasure Hunter
- 40 Resist Gravity
- 50 Flee {5:00/0:30}
- 60 Trick Attack {1:00/Instant}
- 60 Evasion Bonus
- 70 Mug {5:00/Instant}
The only real abilities or traits of note are sneak attack and trick attack. These are both awesome. All of the Samurai's WS can be used with these abilities. All the other abilities are only really for farming. Party use for these is next to nil.
Ranger
Hmmmm..... Ranger. I really like ranger as a Sub-Job early on due to it's accuracy bonus and sharp shot. This job becomes useless after 50 due to warrior getting double attack, and absolutely pointless after 60 when Thief gets SATA. Blah blah blah powers n stuff.
- 01 Wide Scan
- 01 Sharpshot {3:00/1:00}
- 10 Alertness
- 20 Scavenge {5:00/Instant}
- 20 Accuracy Bonus
- 30 Rapid Shot
- 40 Camouflage {5:00/Instant}
- 40 Resist Poison
- 60 Barrage {5:00/Instant}
- 60 Accuracy Bonus
With Samurai's having the second best bow skill in the game at a C+ Ranger seems to be the obvious choice. I am currently using this Sub-Job until 30 when I will be forced to switch to Thief. Until then I am enjoying the boosted Ranged attributes immensely. Sharpshot is great for sealing the deal when using bow WSs. The accuracy bonus is also a great help at 20 when there really isn't that much gear helping with accuracy. Rapid Shot at 30 will help you get in more TP faster by shortening your time on the bow. One of the biggest things you will love this sub for is barrage at 60. This is tons of fun in parties, if you get a party subbing this at 60, because if you connect with it you will get a ton of TP and dish out lots of pain. The only thing you really have to do subbing this is to make macros to equip RACC gear before you shoot and your ACC gear after you shoot. This makes for some really big 6 line macros. Refer to the macro section if you have any questions.
Dragoon/Darknight
The only real purpose to use these as a Sub is for the ATK Bonus from level 20-30. Also DRG will get Jump. This is a good little bit of extra damage and TP. As a SAM early on that's just not a bad idea. You won't have access to the DRG's wyvern, but hey it's still pretty good. At 30 you should probably change out for a different Sub with better abilities.
Wonderful World of Weapons and Armor (At least till 50)
All items in green are just if you can afford and/or get your hands on it. This is some top of the line stuff. Put some time in and try to acquire some of it.

Skill Chains/Renkai
This chart is going to be your life blood for your entire career as a Samurai. Learn it. Love it. Live it. This is Aden's Renkai Chart. You can find it all over the internet. I highly recommend finding a really nice color printer and printing out a copy to hang next to your monitor so that you can Organize SCs on the fly. This is your job now as the party's SAM. Get used to the idea. Making the SCs is as much your job as healing is the WHM's. Later in the game (level 50 and beyond) you will have to pay special attention to what ancient magics your BLM has available. Should you have a competent BLM in your party he/she will know what to do with the ancient magics. In order for the BLM to burst with ancient magic they must initiate the skillchain by starting to cast the spell. Usually they will have a pre-built macro saying when each person needs to start their WS. The macro looks kinda like this....
/ma "Freeze" <t>
/wait 3
/p {Ready to start skillchain!} (the auto translate or, Go first WS)
/wait 3
/p Go second WS.
Finishes casting 2 seconds later.
A properly done ancient magic burst will damn near kill anything with less than 1/3 health remaining. So learn it well and practice ... practice ... practice.
Good Eats
Food is going to play a huge part in your effectiveness as a Samurai. By dealing more damage and hitting more often ... yeah you've read it all before. Here is your effective food listing.

Macro Building
As usual I will preach about the necessity of building useful, but not cluttered macros. Your macros will make your job as a Samurai either very easy or really difficult. Make some for weapon skills as well as equipment changes. TP macros are a must. Here are some of the macros I use for my Samurai.
Weapon Skills
This is a must make. You know this and probably have some for other jobs. You will just need to tailor them a bit more for ease of SC.
For SC opening WSs
/p {Ready to start Skillchain}
/wait 1
/p Using {name of weapon skill} on <t>.
/wait 1
/ws "weapon skill" <t>
WS closing a SC
Hit the macro right when you see the animation for the first WS and you will never miss another SC again.
/p Using {Name of Weapon Skill} on <t> in 3.
/wait 2
/ws "weapon skill" <t>
Bow Macro
This is so that you can swap in your RACC rings before you shoot your bow. You can alter this macro a bit for use with WS as well.
/equip Ring1 "name of ring"
/equip Ring2 "name of ring"
/ra
/wait 6
/equip Ring1 "name of ring"
/equip Ring2 "name of ring"

- 10 Provoke {0:30/Instant}
- 20 Defense Bonus
- 30 Berserk {5:00/3:00}
- 30 Resist Virus
- 50 Defender {3:00/3:00}
- 50 Double Attack
- 60 Attack Bonus
- 70 War Cry {5:00/0:30}
- 10 Steal {5:00/Instant}
- 10 Gil Finder
- 20 Evasion Bonus
- 30 Sneak Attack {1:00/Instant}
- 30 Treasure Hunter
- 40 Resist Gravity
- 50 Flee {5:00/0:30}
- 60 Trick Attack {1:00/Instant}
- 60 Evasion Bonus
- 70 Mug {5:00/Instant}
- 01 Sharpshot {3:00/1:00}
- 10 Alertness
- 20 Scavenge {5:00/Instant}
- 20 Accuracy Bonus
- 30 Rapid Shot
- 40 Camouflage {5:00/Instant}
- 40 Resist Poison
- 60 Barrage {5:00/Instant}

/p {Ready to start Skillchain}
/wait 1
/p Using {name of weapon skill} on <t>.
/wait 1
/ws "weapon skill" <t>
WS closing a SC
Hit the macro right when you see the animation for the first WS and you will never miss another SC again.
/p Using {Name of Weapon Skill} on <t> in 3.
/wait 2
/ws "weapon skill" <t>
Bow Macro
This is so that you can swap in your RACC rings before you shoot your bow. You can alter this macro a bit for use with WS as well.
/equip Ring1 "name of ring"
/equip Ring2 "name of ring"
/ra
/wait 6
/equip Ring1 "name of ring"
/equip Ring2 "name of ring"
