Tonight, I was fortunate enough to defeat the Shadow Lord, and attain Rank 6. I would like to tell everyone the story.
Before that, however, he is the AK link to the Mission.

Most of you know Wills, and last weekend we decided we both needed to do Mission 5-2, and we set today as the day we would get it done. So early this evening, I settled in for a long night of shouting in Jeuno for help, figuring it would be hard to come by. Much to my delight, not only did I find people who were willing to go, I found more than I could handle. We ended up having 9 people who wanted to go, and sadly, three were turned away because we simply could not make proper arrangements.
The party setup was as follows...
55SAM (myself)
58DRG (more on her later)
59WHM
59PLD
61BLM (our ol' buddy Crimzon)
62DRG (Wills, the crazy Canuck).
We also had a 72PLD go along to escort us and open the gates for us, so we wouldn't lose sneak/invis opening them. Special thanks and all the credit in the world should be given to Thugg. Without him, we would have been gone for sure.
Anyways, we teleported out to Xarcabard, and made for Castle Zvahl. Everyone brought along Silent Oils and Prism Powders. It was everyone's own responsibility to keep themselves both with sneak and invisible, as it would be near impossible for the mages to keep us all covered. The Castle is full of Beastmen packed into it like Sardines.
The trip through the castle was long and tedious. The path was winding, sneak and invisible drops came at the worst times, and more than once Thugg had to really bail us out. A stack of both prisms and silent oils didn't seem to be quite enough, as I ran out of prisms near the end. Luckily Wills had some to spare and covered me. Thanks Wills!
We had set up a game plan beforehand, knowing that the Shadow Lord has 3 different 'phases'.
For the first phase, all the melee engage the Shadow Lord, using their Job Abilities, but NOT their 2 hours or TP. TP was to be saved for later. Eventually, the melee will begin to hit for 0 damage. This is the sign that it's time for Phase 2.
At this time, the PLD in the party may want to use his Invincible to help hold hate. The Shadow Lord will be immune to all physical attacks, so you will need your mages to nuke him. Once this 2nd phase is over, you are given a short time to catch your breath. Then it is on to the 2nd form of the Shadow Lord, which is really phase 3.
During Phase 3, you will not need to bother with trying to hold hate, as the Shadow Lord will not be attacking any one person directly. Instead, he will hit hard and quick with AoE abilities. You need to kill this final form as quickly as possible. At this time, melees should unload their TP, and if they have an appropriate 2 hour (Mighty Strikes, Meikyo Shisui, Hundred Fists, etc.), it should be used.
Going into the fight, we were relatively confident we would be ok. However, we ran into a major snag toward the end. When we got to the Throne Room, the non-Wills DRG was not allowed in. She had forgotten to complete all the necessary prerequisites for the Mission. She had spent all that time (and money for supplies) for not. It was unfortunate, but we had no choice but to go on without her.
This dealt a severe blow to our confidence. Going in, we were confident, but by no means was our party overkill. Unfortunately, the 72PLD escort had already headed home. We had to go it with 5.
To say it was a close fight would be an understatement. It looked to be a dead lock for a while. It was the most fun fight I think I have ever taken part in playing this game.
Needless to say, we did succeed, but it was VERY close. Crimzon was down to I believe 55 HP at one point in time, and when we finished the fight, everyone but Crimzon was in the yellow. He was actually in the red. Both mages had less than 30 MP left. I was extremely pumped!
After the fight, it was a short Warp II trip back to Jeuno, where Wills and I caught the airship back to Sandy to claim our Ranks. From there, it was off to Norg to do Zilart Mission 1 and Zilart Mission 2, which both simply involved watching some (AWESOME) cutscenes.
I managed to snap a few pictures of the trip, but unfortunately, I was more concerned with winning the fight than with capturing it on film. I will post them below, and I hope they will not be spoilers for those who have yet to take part in this mission.
This is outside the Throne Room, looking into what is presumably the Shadow Lord's house.
This is a somewhat hectic picture taken early in the fight.
This is a really good picture. I think it gives a good look at the Shadow Lord, including his diesel sword.
